Building Blocks of English

Three building blocks -> Vocabulary + Grammar + Presentation

1.Words/Vocabulary - Bricks       
  • ( Prelims)         
  •  Word power made easy  - Norman Lewis
2.Grammar               - Cement       
  • (Mains)           
  •  Wren and Martin High school English grammar
3.Style/accent           - Painting      
  •  (Interview)     
  •   News,Documentaries,Movies etc.
Note :

  1. Quality content should be gained by reading news papers , different varieties of books  and magazines etc. on a regular basis.
  2. There is no alternative to practice.


Precis-writing

  1. Underline as many key points  as you can in blue during the first reading.
  2. During the second reading, Underline the core key points in red from only those key points which have already been underlined in blue.
  3. Convert  the underlined key points from blue to red in case your  content  is too less or from red to blue to if the content exceeds the word limit.
  4. Start forming your sentences with the resulting key points  that have been underlined in red.
  5. Combine the key points wherever necessary to keep the answer within word limit.

Essay



A.Introduction

  1. Subject
  2. Core points of each paragraph ( What you are gonna be talking about ? )
  3. Thesis

B.Body

Paragraph 1,
Paragraph 2,
Paragraph 3 and so on......


Format of each Paragraph  :

  1. Mention the main point
  2. Give an explanation to your point
  3. Prove your point with an illustration/example/quotes from authors
  4. Relate the paragraph to your thesis

C.Conclusion-
  1. Re-introduce introduction subtly not letting the reader notice that you are repeating the introduction
  2. Summarize your paragraphs in (B)
  3. Make a final statement to conclude your thesis and let the reader know that you have ended your essay

Note:

1.Think and jot down anything and everything you know about the topic. Re-organize main points to suit the format of essay given above and sub-points that fits into main points in the decreasing order of their importance ( Strong to weak) . This is called brain storming.

2. Each paragraph from introduction to conclusion should have a flow. ( The last sentence of the previous paragraph should give a smooth transition to the first sentence of the next paragraph)

3.The first paragraphs in (B) should begin with the strongest point and gradually move towards the less stronger points.The last paragraph in (B) should contain the weakest point. These points should be noted down and arranged in decreasing order during the brain storming session as mentioned in Note 1.
