What is a gene?


A gene is a hereditary unit that is transformed from parents to offspring.

A distinct sequence of nucleotides forming part of chromosomes

OR

A unit of heredity composed of DNA occupied a fixed position on a chromosome. A gene may determine the characteristic of an individual by specifying a polypeptide chain that forms a protein or part of a protein.

Genes encodes RNA molecule or regulate the operation of other genes or suppress those operations.
